This is the most hilarious image I've ever made of an animal, and it might be the most hilarious that I will ever make. Whenever I see this I have to laugh.
It is difficult to imagine what is behind the grebes reaction, but the most probable guess is that here it realizes it is being watched, and only now it is aware that I am sitting in a low chair near the water.
The droplet pattern shows how fast its head is turning into my direction and if you look in its eyes, I guess you can see some shock. It is a sort of reaction when you sneak towards somebody and then shout loudly "SURPRISE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!".
