Kalakshetra Repertory returns to Kalaa Utsavam and for the first time with their kathakali troupe. Kathakali, an important genre in the Indian classical dance form comes from Kerala and is performed by male actor-dancers. The art form is associated with storytelling and is highly recognisable by elaborately colourful make-up, costumes and face masks.
Similar to other Indian classical dances, the story in Kathakali is communicated through intricate footwork and gestures of face and hands, complimented with music and vocal performance.
Over three different evenings, Kalakshetra Repertory performs three stories from the Mahabharata—Keechaka Vadham and Ramayana, Lavanasura Vadham and Sita Swayamvaram.
