Flock Together

A large flock of Brant (Branta bernicla) prepare to join their brethren. This image was just being in the right spot at the right time. My friend Ray and I were driving around, stopping to look for waterfowl photo opportunities at any access to water that we could find. We stopped at a small park and when we walk down to the water, we noticed hundreds of brant feeding way out in the bay. Right as we were about to leave, a couple of them took off and flew right by us, landing on a sand spit only 30 yards away. Then as if on cue, the rest of the flock got up to join them. We raced to get our cameras ready and were able to photograph the geese as they circled the sand spit and landed in groups of 20 or 30. It couldn't have been any better, as the wind and sun were to our back.
