Go with the Flow

Long-tailed Ducks (Clangula hyemalis) are probably my absolute favorite waterfowl species. They are beautiful in both summer and winter plumage, and their courting and feeding antics can be quite fun to watch. In inlets like Barnegat, they drift out or in with the tide, diving to feed on the plentiful mussels that are found along the jetty. Then at the end of the drift, they fly back up-current and do it all over again. This never-ending conga line of birds makes for awesome photographic opportunities and a fun way to kill some time bird watching.
