Mapping a World

“Mapping a World,” 19x122x111 cm, October 2013, navigational maps, glue, card, foam pads, wood base, magnets, motor.

Intended to be in motion, captured here with a slow shutter speed.

To “map a world” I chose to create a map of fictional landmasses using educational navigation maps. Giving an almost post-apocalyptic effect that the landmasses have been engulfed by water, only the lands surface remaining. Creating contour line shapes with foam pads to raise them above the layer underneath to show that there are mountains remaining. I glued the negative side of the magnets to the underside of each nation. The underside of the wood base has a motor that moves in a circular motion, with magnets also attached on positive and negative ends. When the motor starts running the nations move around erratically with no set path as if being moved by the water the islands are submerged in.
