two canons and an old oak..

Two cannons and an old oak at Rød Manor - Halden - Norway

At the lowest end of the gardens is a cannon battery, which was regularly used to welcome visitors in the old days

HISTORY:

Rød manor is one of the finest and best preserved manors in Norway, with restored buildings, a baroque garden and a small English landscape park. Many of the shrubs and trees here are uncommon in Norway.

This is firstly because much of the very fertile soil came from England and was dumped here after being ballast in sailing ships, and secondly because of the sheltered setting.

There are over thirty types of rose, a market garden, a linden grove, greenhouses, and many types of deciduous tree, such as oak and beech.

By the large beeches there is a record of the last visit of Prince Christian August in 1810-his monogram is carved into a rock face
