Trial Molds Sizing Test
Smooth-On OOMOO 30 for Mold. Easy Cast Resin for Casts.
The Smooth-On OOMOO 30 is very easy to work with. Very affordable - for the cost, you get twice the amount as alumilite (although alumilite can be found at many local craft stores and can be combined with any craft store's 40-50% off coupon thus making the costs very affordable too). But I digress, the Smooth-On molds capture detail equally as well. My only complaint is the bulk price and that the Smooth-On decays way faster than the Alumilite Molds. I would like to trial a different hardness or perhaps some of the more flexible series like Dragon Skin to see if these offer improvement. Overall, very satisfied with the Smooth-On OOMOO 30. The purple color helps for pouring the mold, and makes it easier to catch mistakes and bubbles before its too late.
The Easy Cast Resin has its pros and cons. Pros: I got it for free! Also, it can be made more flexible than the Alumilite Super Plastic, which makes for better longevity, reduction in paint/plastic scratching, and joints (ie neck peg into neck joint). Cons: errors in measurements, mixing, dye amounts, and curing can lead to flexible and sticky casts. The Easy Cast resin is very finicky, compared to the Alumilite Super Plastic Resin. Because the Easy Cast resin can take 72 hours to cure, a poor batch can set you back days.
Casting in clear, without dye, the casts come out crystal clear, even without a vacuum pot. Will have difficulty with complicated molds, and so pre-coating the inside of the mold with resin before pouring the rest in can help prevent external bubbles.
These were dyed with alumilite resin dyes. Very great quality dyes, and very concentrated. One drop per 25ml resin resulted in these. Two drops would result in an even purer white.
Smooth-On was purchased from Utrecht (www.utrechtart.com/) with a 30% off coupon. Yay for coupons!
