A dragon? bench end
St Helen's church at Gateley has some remaining Saxon masonry, but the chancel was rebuilt in 1866.
Some of the pews have carved tracery backs and carved bench ends. Although these have been dated to 1602, it's believed they could be even older due to their mutilation. This creature has wings, so could be a dragon.
