C10th font

Up to 2006, St Thomas church in Mellor was part of Glossop parish in the Diocese of Derby. It's now in the Diocese of Chester. The tower is C15th, but the rest of the church is C18th when it was partly rebuilt.

A Saxon church would have stood here and the font is all that remains of it. It is inscribed with figures, including a horse and rider and a creature with its tail in it mouth. At some stage a tap has been inserted to allow the draining of water following baptisms.
