Priory church of St Peter, Thurgarton

The Priory church of St Peter in Thurgarton was founded c1119 - 1139 by Ralph de Ayncourt for Augustinian canons. Along with other monasteries it was dissolved in 1534. The tower was originally one of a pair. The Great West Door to the far left is all that remains of the original medieval priory. The chancel was added in 1852.

The house to the right was built on the site of the monastery in 1777. It was rebuilt for John Gilbert Cooper between 1884 - 1904 and was used as a "Palace" for the 1st Bishop of Southwell. Surrounding land was given to Trinity College, Cambridge who retain nominal responsibility for providing a parish priest.
