Writer's Room, Oriental Hotel, Bangkok. March 2009.

In 1923, Somerset Maugham wrote his "Siamese Fairy Tale" while sitting on the Oriental's river terrace to the right. His photo hangs on the wall with Eric Blair and other fabbo Brit scribblers.

 

In 2009 I wrote my signature onto an AmEx bill for a pot of tea for two and a dobbing huge platter of cakes. But we left cash for the tip.
