Merritt Square Mall originally opened in 1970, and as of 2018 is anchored by Sears, JCPenney, Macy’s, Dillard’s, Cobb Cinemas, and Books-A-Million. Merritt Square’s Books-A-Million store appears to have been added to the mall sometime in the mid-late 90’s. I want to say that BAM took over the former McCrory’s space (as the store seems about the right size for a McCrory’s), but I’m not 100% sure on that. As I mentioned before, the Merritt Island BAM’s “café” is located just beyond the Pop World department, adjacent to the mall entrance. Unlike most bookstore cafes, which are traditionally a coffee shop, Books-A-Million did something different here. Within the last few years, Books-A-Million converted this store’s Joe Muggs café into a trendy new frozen yogurt shop called Yogurt Mountain. Yogurt Mountain is a frozen yogurt chain based out of Birmingham, AL that Book-A-Million bought out in 2013 (after BAM originally bought a small share of Yogurt Mountain in 2010). From what I understand, Yogurt Mountain shops have been slowly popping up in former Joe Muggs spaces at select Books-A-Million stores since the acquisition, in addition to Yogurt Mountain’s existing freestanding operations.
