Kappa Komainu, Suwa Shrine, Nagasaki

Komainu ("lion dogs") guard Japanese shinto shrines. Suwa Shrine includes a number of unusual komainu, including ones shaped like the mythical kappa, a river goblin that carries water in a hole on the top of its head.
