MY FANTASY HAIR DESIGN FOR MY FANTASY HAIR ASSIGNMENT BASED AROUND ALICE IN WONDERLAND .

My concept for this idea was for it to be quite dark. I wanted it to be based around Alice never finding her way home from Wonderland and being stuck there for so long she too eventually goes mad and ends up becoming a part of Wonderland so things start growing on her, like moss and spiders start living on her and making nests and birds start to nest in her hair.

In order to achieve this look I did the following…

I had pre-heated my crimpers so that when my model arrived I could start straight away and they were nice and hot. I started off by brushing through my models hair and then dividing it into four sections called “A hot cross bun” on her head.

STEP ONE – I then grabbed one bit of hair at a time about 2cm in width and sprayed it with a styling spray before crimping.

I decided to combine techniques in order to give the hair texture ready for back combing. I crimped her hair and I curled it as well. I focused mainly on curling the ends of the hair so that when it came to the final steps of the hairstyle the ends of the hair would stick out as if they were twigs in a birds nest.

STEP TWO- When a crimp or a curl was done I would then spray it with extra hold hairspray to keep it in place and clip it out of the way using sectioning clips so I could do the hair underneath. My model then got changed into her outfit for the shoot before continuing.

STEP THREE – After her whole head had been crimped and curled I then took a small section of the hair from the centre top part of the head and created an anchor point with it. I backcombed this section and then tied it with a hair tie.

STEP FOUR – I then started to back comb pieces of her hair using a back comb brush. I did this by spraying the hair with hairspray, pulling the hair gently upwards and using the “Backwards C” method in order to back comb the hair down to the root. I then took this section of hair and wrapped it around the anchor point and clipped it into it, slowly building the hair upwards and outwards to get the shape of a nest. I left some sections of the front of her hair free to cover any gaps that might pop up along the way. I also built the nest so that it covered her centre parting that was showing through so I had it going down onto her forehead slightly, but in my opinion this made it look prettier.

STEP FIVE – As the hair was building upwards I had to keep stretching the hair out that was clipped in to the centre in order to create the hollow shape of a nest as it was slowly closing in with the amount of hair.

STEP SIX - I left some sections of the hair free at the sides and back of the head to create plaits with and then I wrapped these around the nest.

STEP SEVEN – After all the hair was wrapped around the nest I then set it with hairspray for extra hold. I left some wispy bits and ends of the hair sticking out so that it looked messy. Nests created by birds arent tidy, they have branches sticking out all over the place so this was ideal for me.

STEP EIGHT – I then started to add the props. The first prop I added was the bird. I attached the birds feet undeath the anchor point by digging them into the hair, I then clipped them into place using lots bobby pins to make sure it was secure.

STEP NINE – The next prop I added was the eggs. I had the pull the nest outwards slightly in order to fit them all in but I managed it in the end . I made sure I dug these in tightly so that they wouldn’t fall out of fly away in the wind as they were made from polystyrene so were really light in weight.

STEP TEN – I then added the leaves. I dug these underneath the plaits to hold them. I had lots of coloured leaves in colours like purples, red and orange but I stuck with the natural colour of green.

STEP ELEVEN – I then added the cobweb to her hair. I clipped it in around the back of head and had it hanging down onto her shoulder. I then attached a two spiders, one small one that you can see a little bit above her ear in the photo and then a bigger one that I balanced on her shoulder.

STEP TWELVE – It was now time for makeup after all the props had been added. I kept it to a very naturistic theme and very dark also. I gave her green and black eyes, black eye brows, pale skin, black lips and then I added the moss onto the side of the face.

I thought this would be a nice sfx touch because moss is often found on trees in the woods so I thought in order to make her look more like she’s been in the forest in Wonderland for a while I would include this in her makeup and keep with the theme.
