Armando Diaz
The Italian Condottieri class cruiser visiting Melbourne during her tour of 1934-5 .
At this time she was virtually a new ship .
Very fast , her maximum speed was 36.5 kts but it came with a trade off of light armour . When in combat it didn't always end well for these ships : she sank in 1941 after being torpedoed by a British submarine . 484 crew were lost as a magazine exploded .
From a glass plate negative by the late Alan C Green , held by the State Library of Victoria .
