Trolls & White Horses

Once upon a time,

- long before pretty ladies started getting tattoos which were once the preserve of tough weatherbeaten sailors & prisoners (the kind that stubbed their cigarettes out in the palms of their hands),

little pigs made houses from straw, sticks or bricks, depending on how smart they were,

& big bad wolves used to blow a lot if they fancied little pigs for supper.

The only Trolls you ever heard about were big, scary monsters in fairy tales & they always, always waited under bridges to get you.

That was in the days before you carried a phone in your pocket & then Trolls started appearing on the internet as well.

There are Trolls in Iceland too, but they're perfectly fine because they were turned to stone ages ago, so nothing to be scared of, you can see them right here silhouetted against the horizon.

Sometimes photography is really easy - you know where you want to be, what lens you're going to use, what filters you'll be juggling with & whether or not you'll be doing a pano & you're cruising on autopilot.

At times like this, Mother Nature throws you a curveball & things can get a little confusing.

You really want to give the telephoto an airing & zoom right in on these monster waves to do them justice - but how on Earth can you do that & exclude those iconic trolls lingering in the background - you could shoot waves anywhere on the coast in a gale couldn’t you?

Besides wouldn't that be the same analogy as going somewhere like Westminster Bridge or the Leaning Tower of Pisa, getting a selfie stick out but only photographing your face & not the background? - & wouldn't that just be pointless? because then you might as well do a selfie in the back garden mightn't you?

In Greek mythology, Poseidon - God of the Sea created a horse to amuse his mistress Demeter before he tired of her.

Sailing types will know that breaking waves are referred to as white horses - because the crest of the wave resembles the mane of a horse & the the crashing waves sound like thundering hooves.

Here you can see the resemblance clearly - you'll have to trust me that the sound was dramatic. This was taken mid afternoon with that Arctic light that gives a golden hour feel to much of the day.

We stayed here for what seemed minutes but turned out to be hours - the white horses were awe inspiring & mesmerising.

If you pass near a bridge this weekend be very very careful - you never really know what might be lurking underneath :))

Hope everyone has a Flickrtastic weekend!
