Blue LED point source of light
A camera w/ 14 - 24 mm lens to cast shadows
White packing foam to act as target for shadows
The point source of light + very deep crevices in in a white target create three interesting effects.
1. The edges of the shadow are quite sharp.
2. The deeper the crevice - the lighter the shadow! *
3. Parts of the crevices totally obscure other parts of the shadow.
* it seems that multiple reflections in the crevices actually lighten some parts of the shadow.
