Coruscant. The word hit me like a charging Mudhorn when Kevin explained the location of our next mission. Of all the places in the galaxy, the Survivors were being sent to Coruscant.
My team was tasked with getting two other task forces through to the planets surface. The New Republic had furnished us with and Imperial Sphyrna-class Hammerhead corvette loving duded the Mynock by Gus. as we jumped away from the fleet toward hyperspace I had the sinking feeling that everything was going to go wrong.
I didn't say much during the flight. Gus and Kevin were chatting about the festivites that would be taking place on Coruscant and the rest of the crew was lounging in the conference quarters. I looked out the viewport to see the familiar starlines sliding past, and all the while we got closer to Coruscant.
Imaged flashed through my mind. I remembered that excited cadet staring wide-eyed as she saw Coruscant's skyline for the first time. There were so many lights, so many people, and she had been lucky enough to come here for training at the greatest Imperial academy in the galaxy.
Then there was a graduation ceremony, and that young cadet now much older was receiving her acceptance transmission into ISB.
Then the endless hours of training, (hand-to-hand, blasters, vibroblades) tactical analysis, and lessons in troop command.
The images of friends and enemies at ISB flashed across my memory at hyperspeed.
And then there was the ISB graduation. 12 new agents, top of there class, stood in two rows as Emperor Palpatine commissioned us into service. And even though it was a hologram, a cold presence seemed to permeate the air whenever Palpatine spoke.
Then the final images, of her last days on Coruscant before the fall of the Empire. Her fellow agents had ordered her to return to the Imperial capitol with the rest of ISB. When she refused they deserted her.
I stopped daydreaming and stared at the starlines for a bit longer. ISB was in complete control of Coruscant, and that was were I was going. Straight into the heart of a world were everyone would think me a traitor not just of the Empire, but of ISB.
The console in front of Gus started blinking.
"Approaching Coruscant," he said, "Might wanna strap in-"
And suddenly the starlines wavered as the Mynock was wrenched out of hyperspace.
"Dank Ferrik!" cried Kevin and Gus in unison.
"That's impossible," I exclaimed, "Interdictor cruisers were put out of commission years ago."
"Well it seems like ISB found one, sister," Kevin remarked.
The comms suddenly became active and the voice of a clipped male ISB agent rang out through the bridge.
"Sphyrna-class corvette, you have entered airspace of the Imperial Security Bureau and failed to stop at checkpoint 7. Shut down your engines and prepare to be boarded by an inspection team."
Gus looked at me in alarm and mouthed the words, "what do we do?"
I reached over to the comm station and keyed open the channel.
"ISB cruiser, I order you to stand down and release your hold on this ship. I am under direst orders from ISB command to bring this vessel in."
"Don't play games with me, corvette," the comms spat," Your ship is not registered under any ISB records. Who is this anyway?"
A name jumped into my brain immediately.
"Agent Arlin Hide, I am sending over my clearance codes to you now."
The comm was silent for a moment. Then I heard an audible gasp from the other end and the voice returned much more cordially.
"Pardon me Agent," he said, "I'll have you going on your way immediately. Please divert to the lanes 0043 and land at the Northern docks. And next time please get better information on the current security measures."
Before I could respond the transmission cut off as did the tractor beam holding our ship.
"Whew," Breathed Gus, "that was close, lucky you were once an ISB agent right?"
I didn't answer him. Something in that exchange wasn't right. Could it be that ISB had gotten lazy over the years since the Empire's fall? I was trying to sort it our when the atmosphere around our ship disappeared and the glorious Coruscanti skyline filled the viewports. Kevin got out the chair and stretched his legs.
He gave me a big Trandoshan grin and said, "Showtime!"
