Butter Bridge

Butter Bridge, Glen Kinglas, near Cairndow, Argyll This single-span masonry bridge was built under the supervision of Major Edward Caulfeild, as part of the military road from Dumbarton to Inveraray. It survives virtually unaltered, as it was bypassed in the 1930s. This view shows the bridge, over the Kinglas Water, from the north west. The snow-covered mountain is Ben Ime. The segmental arch is unusually flat for a military road bridge, but is typical in springing from the foot of its abutments. The Dumbarton to Inveraray military road was a major work, and remained in use with very little alteration until the 1930s. This bridge is on the Arrochar to Cairndow section known as the Rest and be Thankful
