Historic Offley Place
On a trip home to England one winter, we stayed at Offley Place in Hertfordshire. I visited the county to investigate places where my ancestors once lived. Many came from St. Paul's Walden, just south of Offley.
Offley Place is now a luxury Country House Hotel set in 27 acres of parkland.
It is a 17th-century manor house, with later rebuild in the Gothic style around 1806-1810.
I learned that the original house was built by Sir Richard Spencer and while most of it was demolished, the rebuilt version retains a Tudor porch and a 17th-century wing.
Sir Richard Spencer (b 1552 d 1624). 4th son of Sir John Spencer of Althorp who, in 1554, bought the manors of Offley and Cockernhoe in Hertfordshire, followed by further lands there in 1571. These were conveyed to Richard Spencer in 1577.
