Some lovely sandstone weathering seen near the harbour in Sydney.

 

I think these are tafoni in geological terms, cavities that develop in granular rock. I read that the common factors in the environments in which they are found are high salt concentrations and frequent or occasional desiccating conditions - perfectly placed so close to the ocean and with our very hot summers.
