Giant valanga: world's largest grasshopper

NB: Image has been turned for detail; grasshopper was head up on a garden wall.

Valanga irregularis is the largest of the short horned (antennae) grasshoppers here in Australia and the largest in the world, with adults growing up to 9 cm in length.

The colouration and markings of adults can be extremely variable, hence the species name of irregularis. Adults can be distinguished by the black-tipped orange to red spines on the tibia of the hind leg.

Adult male.
