Feathers and frost

A dusky thrush seemed to be coping with the sub-zero temperatures better than me, on a freezing winter's early morning in Sapporo, Hokkaido, (Japan's most northern island).

With its beautiful rufous colours and patterned plumage, it was all fluffed up to ward off the frost and freeze.

These birds breed eastwards from central Siberia to Kamchatka and then winter in Japan, South China and Myanmar. Where I am sure they find it 'warmer' than it would be in Siberia!

20 - 23 cm body length.
