East High Street Sidewalk Pavers Springfield Ohio

In a few places, these now rare Victorian era ceramic pavers are still incorporated in sidewalks along period residential areas. East High Street in Springfield still has a few areas with pavers of this kind. They were probably made in Ohio as the Buckeye state was a national center of ceramic production in the late 19th century. While Ohio's high quality potteries and art tiles (often used for fireplace hearths) are better known, utilitarian products like these pavers were part of the production lines. The fact that they have survived well over a century of use is evidence of their durability as well as ornamental forms. Similar pavers can be seen in the Bradford, PA album in my photostream.
