Crossing Cascade Trestle

Denver & Rio Grande Western K-36 Locomotive #484 takes an eastbound freight across the 408 ft. long iron trestle over Cascade Creek, at Milepost 319.95. Built in 1889, this 8-span, deck-plate girder bridge towers 137 ft. above the creek bed below. The train is just a mile and a half from the railroad waystation at Osier, CO, which historically was home to a section crew and where fuel and water were available. On the present-day Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad, the section house at Osier is preserved, but the section crew has long departed the scene. The site still hosts an operational water tank as well as a large, modern dining hall, where all of the tourist trains now stop for lunch.
