Plowing the "esses"

With snow depths of about 18" and climbing, the former Denver & Rio Grande Western Rotary Snowplow OY is beginning to labor just a bit as she works through the serpentine curves at Milepost 336.8, pushed along by K-36 Locomotives #s 487 and 484. The train is approaching the track feature that has come to be known in the modern era as "Orgasm Curve", so named more because of the "activities" of teenagers who would park on the mesa above than anything related to the railroad.

This image was captured on February 29th of 2020, during the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad's special rotary plow event for photographers. Billed as the kick-off to the railroad's 50th anniversary as a tourist operation, this event was attended by 150 photographers from around the world. It was the first time that the line had operated a rotary plow since 1997.
