Rounding Fish Point
If there are any "iconic" photos of the Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad Co. & Museum's operations in Portland, Maine, this one probably qualifies as well as any. In this image, the 33-ton Bridgton & Saco River Railroad #7 brings her excursion consist around the big, sweeping curve at Fish Point, during an afternoon excursion in June of 2018. The two-foot gauge trains operate here on about 1.3 miles of former Grand Trunk right-of-way, which run parallel to Portland's Eastern Promenade Trail. Although none of the Maine 2-foot railroads ever operated in Portland, and this line doesn't resemble any of the authentic operating locations at all, it is far more scenic than a typical, New England "tree-tunnel". The location, right downtown in Maine's largest city, also provides the museum with a much larger potential ridership pool than would be the case at one of the historic, 2-foot railroad locations, such as Bridgton, Monson, or Phillips.
