Western & Atlantic "General": cab view

Unlike the display featuring the Western & Atlantic "Texas" at the Atlanta History Center, the display featuring the "General" at the Southern Museum of Civil War & Locomotive History does not permit the public to enter the cab of the locomotive. This image of the cab was captured from the balcony above the display and shows most of the boiler backhead and appliances. Because the General was restored by the Louisville & Nashville Railroad for operation in the 1960s and did in fact operate on Class 1 railroads for several years, her cab is much more complex that the one captured in my photos of Texas. Despite the pile of wood on her tender, the General is configured to burn oil and has all of the hardware on the fireman's side necessary for that. She and also has a water glass and controls for air brakes, neither of which Texas has. As such, the cab of the General looks very different from how it looked during the April, 1862 Andrews Raid or "Great Locomotive Chase."
