Adairsville Depot

Here's an alternate view of the old Western & Atlantic RR depot at Adairsville, GA. In this view, the tracks (now CSX) are behind the building. On April 12th, 1862 the Andrews Raiders and their locomotive "General" passed through this location as they headed north, with the intent to burn several key bridges on the W&ARR. Unfortunately, about 10 miles north of here, at Calhoun Station, they encountered the southbound freight headed up by the locomotive "Texas." Unbeknownst to the raiders, that locomotive with Engineer Peter Bracken and Firemen Henry Haney, would very soon become their pursuer.

Of particular note in this image is a mural painted on the back wall of the depot. That mural depicts the final moments of the "Great Locomotive Chase", with the "General" running north (and running out of fuel), and the "Texas" close behind, running in reverse.
