On the horseshoe at Tanglefoot
Running westbound toward Cumbres Pass, just a mile ahead, a Denver & Rio Grande Western freight negotiates the horseshoe curve at Milepost 329.8, on what is today referred to as "Tanglefoot Curve", with K-36s 487 and 488 in control. Known historically as "Cumbres Loop", this track feature, just southeast of Cumbres Pass, is one of many "detours" on the railroad, which don't go in the desired direction, but help to keep the grades manageable for narrow gauge rod engines, by following the contours of the land.
This image was captured during an October 2012 photo shoot on the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad, organized by Lerro Photography.
