Tannehill Ironworks Furnance
Located in the Tannehill State Park near McCalla in Tuscaloosa County AL.
During the Civil War this Tannehill Ironworks furnace (also as the Roupes Valley Iron Company) and two other furnaces at this site produced pig iron that was used to manufacture ordnance for the Confederate military forces. This site and other furnaces in the regions were raided and demolished by Federal forces from the U.S. 8th Iowa Cavalry in March 1865.
In 1976 Tannehill furnace #1 was restored and support structure was rebuilt. In September of that year, using raw materials & support equipment provided by local industries and with oversight support from the University of Alabama firing was achieved. After two weeks of preparation by volunteers from regional foundries the furnace was successfully fired following originally used processes and two and one half tons of pig iron was produced on September 19th.
The furnace and surrounding site is on the National Register of Historic Places.
