Saving swans
Some of the swans at Exeter Quay are getting frozen and stuck. I watched this swan for 2 hours this morning. It couldn't walk on the ice (kept tripping) and then occasionally broke through the ice, but only to have the water around it freeze up again. It then flapped and struggled to get out of the ice holes. This man from the "River Exe and Exeter Ship Canal" (part of the City Council) stopped by to try to break the ice. See him throwing in this spade on the end of a rope. Lots of concerned people standing around.
I chatted to an old man, who said the river hasn't frozen here for 15 years. The swans aren't used to it.
