England's Lost History
Enamelled Roman British Trumpet Brooch. 100AD
Its easy to forget how colourful it was 2000 years ago with the green patina generally found on recovered artefacts, so its fascinating to see some enamel still remaining on this find. The trumpet head was originally decorated with a red enamel background (A little still remaining),underneath two crescents of Celtic style filled with blue enamel and then two D shapes filled with yellow enamel. The foot of the the brooch is divided from the bow by a fully developed acanthus flower which is common on these particular brooches.
