Red Riding Hood Manga
I created a manga style comic based on Angela Carters short story "Warewolf". In this, Carter retells the infamous tale of Red Riding Hood. The story is set in a northern country, residing with superstitious villagers. they are superstitious to the point of stoning those they believe are witches. Red Riding Hood is portrayed as a strong child, capable of protecting herself using her fathers hunting knife. When the wolf attacks her she cuts off its right paw and it whimpers, running back into the woods. The girl keeps the paw in her basket.
When she arrives at Grandmothers house she finds her suffering a terrible fever. When she goes to her basket to make her a cold compress she remembers the paw. Shockingly it has turned into a human hand that is freckled with age and has a wedding ring on the finger, as well as a "third nipple" (a wart which is believed to be a sign of a witch). The girl pulls back the covers and discovers her grandmother is missing her right hand, all that is left is a stump "festering already".
She is horrified that her grandmother is actually a witch and shouts at the top of her lungs until the neighbours barge in. They too soon learn the truth and stone her to death. Red Riding Hood takes the place in the grandmothers house; "now the girl prospered."
