Marvelous Spatuletail

Famous hummingbird restricted to the Andean cloud forest of northern Peru. Due to its extravagant tail, its blue crown and its iridescent green throat, the male of this species is one of the most spectacular birds in the world. Occasionally sheds its distinctive tail feathers, so it is common to see males without one or both "racquets", or with one much longer than the other. The female is mainly green above and white below; best identified by combination of: white patch behind eye, mottled throat, and slightly elongated tail feathers with rounded tips. Feeds on flowers at low to mid levels, usually on edges or in clearings.

The smooth background is a distant mountain.
