Lubigi Faecal Sludge and Wastewater Treatment Plant - Kampala - Uganda
The Lubigi Faecal Sludge and Wastewater Treatment Plant was commissioned in May 2014. It has the capacity to treat 400 m3 of faecal sludge and 5000 m3 of wastewater per day. A technology diagram is included in the photos for more information about the technological set-up.
At this treatment plant, roughly 110 trucks are disposing of faecal sludge collected from septic tanks and pit latrines at households, institutions, public toilets, schools, etc. at this treatment plant.
Treated faecal sludge has high potential to generate resource recovery products, e.g., solid fuel, soil conditioner, protein, and building materials. Dewatered and dried faecal sludge accumulates at Lubigi and Sandec is looking into the pelletisation and gasification of this endproduct. For more information refer to: www.sandec.ch/seek
The treatment plant was implemented by the National Water Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) and Fichtner Water & Transportation, supported with funding by the German Development Bank (KfW) as part of the Kampala Sanitation Program 2008.
