833 IAP (fighter aviation regiment) at Altes Lager was the last Russian unit in East Germany to operate the MiG-23 air defence fighters. They had 26 MiG-23MLD Flogger-K's and 6 MiG-23UB Flogger-C's.
52 Red is carrying external fuel tanks. The regiment was preparing for the final departure to Russia 8 days later. The MiGs flew to Orenburg and then to Lipetsk for 'storage'. They never flew again.
