Tre Kronor castle, Stockholm, A.D. 1697
Tre Kronor (Three Crowns) was a castle located in Stockholm, Sweden, on the site where Stockholm Palace is today. It is believed to have been a citadel that Birger Jarl built into a royal castle in the middle of the 13th century. The name "Tre Kronor" is believed to have been given to the castle during the reign of King Magnus IV in the middle of the 14th century.
Under Royal architect Nicodemus Tessin the Younger a renovation of the castle was started in 1692. The north wing then got its present form in strict Roman baroque style. Palazzo Farnese in Rome seems to have been a model for it.
On May the 7th, 1697 a large fire broke out in Tre Kronor that completely demolished the majority of this now more-than-400-year-old castle. Only parts of the recently finished north wing escaped the flames.
Here the new wing can be seen.
Plans were made to rebuild a new castle on the old foundation. Nicodemus Tessin the Younger was again the architect in charge of rebuilding. The new building, Stockholm Palace, was completed in 1754. Tessin died in 1728 and did not get to see it completed.

Tre Kronor (ursprungligen Stockholm eller Stockholms slott) var en borg och försvarsanläggning som utvecklades till slott och kungligt residens på Stadsholmen i Stockholm, enligt traditionen grundat av Birger jarl vid 1200-talets mitt. Anläggningen kom att kallas Tre Kronor efter 1588. Byggnaderna förstördes i Slottsbranden 1697, och på platsen uppfördes därefter det nuvarande Stockholms slott.
Under ledning av slottsarkitekten Nicodemus Tessin d.y. påbörjades 1692 en ombyggnad av slottet. Slottets norra länga mot Norrbro fick då sitt nuvarande utseende i stram romersk barock. Palazzo Farnese i Rom var synbarligen en förebild för denna nya länga.
Den 7 maj 1697 utbröt den stora slottsbranden ovanför rikssalen i högborgens södra länga, vilken kom att totalförstöra hela det gamla slottet förutom delar av den nyligen ombyggda norra längan. Större delen av Sveriges gamla riksarkiv och kungliga bibliotek förstördes.
Nikodemus Tessin d.y. fick uppdraget att bygga det nya Stockholms slott, som stod klart för inflyttning 1754.
