Slussen, Stockholm

Slussen (the Sluice) is an area of central Stockholm, on the Söderström river connecting Södermalm and Gamla stan. The area is named after the locks between Lake Mälaren and the Baltic Sea. The locks themselves allow passage between these two bodies of water (of different levels). Slussen also refers to the cloverleaf interchange and associated pedestrian passages and walkways created in 1935.

From Wikipedia

Here we see the sightseeing boat Delfin II exiting the sluice chamber westward from Saltsjön (the salt sea), which is part of the Baltic See with brackish water due to the outflow from Lake Mälaren. The difference in levels is rather small, rarely more than a few dm.

As you can see, the free height is rather limited. Sailing boats and large ships have a larger sluice in the Hammarby channel south of the island of Södermalm.

(To call Söderström a river may be a slight exaggeration. It only exists in the sluice. Between Gamla stan and Norrmalm there is a somewhat longer stream, Norrström, which may be as long as 100 m.)

In the distance you see a railway bridge with a blue train from the Stockholm metro.
