Östra Ryds kyrka
Östra Ryd church lies in Österåker community, some 30 km northeast of Stockholm. Östra Ryd is a parish in the Stockholm diocese of the Church of Sweden (Lutheran). The church was built in the first half of the 15th century, after which the grandfather of Gustav Vasa (who became King Gustav I), Johan Christersson Vasa, had the walls and arches painted.
The medieval reredos of oak was made by the artist Johannes Snickare (=Carpenter), while the pulpit was created in the 1690s by Andreas Heysing.
The unusually rich picture collection consists mainly of artwork that the Brahe family acquired and donated to the church in the late 1600s and during the beginning of the 1700s. From the same period are the church chandeliers and a rich silver collection.
In the 1630s, the Chancellor of the Realm, Count Nils Brahe of the neighbouring Rydboholm castle, funded the building of the present tower, the cross arms and the Brahe family chapel. When the last Count Brahe was buried in 1930 by Archbishop Nathan Söderblom, the family's coat of arms was crushed and the key to the family chapel was sunk in the bay below the church.

Den sällsynt rika tavelsamlingen utgöres huvudsakligen av konstverk som ätten Brahe förvärvat och skänkt till kyrkan i slutet av 1600-talet samt under 1700-talets första år. Samtidigt tillfördes kyrkan ljuskronorna jämte rika silversamlingar.
Riksrådet Nils Brahe på Rydboholm lät på 1630-talet förse kyrkan med det nuvarande tornet samt byggde även till korsarmarna och uppförde det Braheska gravkoret. När den siste greve Brahe begrovs 1930 av ärkebiskop Nathan Söderblom krossades ättens vapensköld och gravkorets nyckel sänktes i fjärden nedanför kyrkan.
