Emerald Lake (Jezioro Szmaragdowe), Szczecin, Poland in 1967

A favourite destination of strollers is Emerald Lake, situated in a large beech wood. For many years there was a chalk pit, mined from mid 19th c. by the waterproof Portland cement factory of G. Toepffer, A. Grawitz & Co. In mid 1920s the pit was filled with water and a lake was made of the surface of 4.5 ha and depth of approx. 20 m. Its emerald colour is a result of calcium carbonate.
