Beach in Viserba, Rimini, Italy in 1968
This was my first charter holiday. In those days, the Danish travel agency Spies sold out rest seats at ridiculous prices. I paid 195 SEK (which would today be about 22 EUR) for the return flight from Stockholm plus 2 weeks in a single room in a hotel plus 2 meals a day.
The pilot on the DC7 from Transair was Carl Gustav von Rosen, later famous for rescue flights in the Biafra conflict.
I remember being sooo disappointed with the flight. In the preceding years, I had made car trips to the south of Europe with a few friends. They were so exciting; we just went wherever our fancy took us, looking for the highest mountain passes, the longest tunnels and anything else that seemed promising. It was like sailing - the destination wasn't the important thing, it was the journey. We had a great time. Now, I was sitting in a plane for a few hours, and then I was just there. I had missed all of the journey!
Swimming in the water you see wasn't so nice then since all the water from the toilets was just pumped out into the sea.
