Sailing with S/S Maria to Göta Kanal, Sweden
Göta kanal is one of Sweden's most famous tourist attractions. Since 1832, it runs for 190.5 km from the Baltic Sea to lake Vänern, through 58 locks with a total height of 91.8 m. To continue to the North Sea, you first go through the Trollhätte kanal, which also has a number of locks, and then down Göta Älv (a river).

On the sides of the lock gates are the big white crank handles used to open and close the gates. Today, I believe they are all motorized, but in 1968 they were hand-operated by the lock guard. He appreciated it if you gave a hand.

Maria was bought as a renovation project by a friend of my brother's, a first mate in the Swedish merchant navy. After a year or two, she was condemned by the ship inspector, due to too much rot, so she was scrapped.
