The Battle of Murtaugh had ended when the morning broke red on the horizon. The blood stained hue of the first light pushed back against the shadow of a brutally cruel and violent night to reveal that every soldier who had fought through the darkness had died in pursuit of the fight. For the dawning star lifted the veil from in front of those few remaining credulous eyes that had desperately hoped to find that they had survived the shrouded campaign in their own skin; only to discover in the carnage that remained that all they had done was preserve a broken shell of a soul that they would never be again.
