At Least Two
Australasian Grebe (Tachybaptus novaehollandiae) juvenile
With the expectation that we were about to go into lockdown again I made a quick trip to the Vic Uni Pond to see if the chicks had hatched. When I arrived they were nowhere to be seen and one parent was sitting on the nest. Shortly after I heard the other parent calling, obviously bringing food, and these two climbed from under the parents feathers to be fed. There may be more, I don't know and will not be able to visit again until at least next Thursday. You may note the red patch on the crown. This is an indicator that the chick is hungry. Something I have learned just this week thanks to David Jenkins ( www.flickr.com/photos/birdsaspoetry ) when it came up on his blog. You can read more about it here - birdsaspoetry.com/2021/02/07/saturday-evening-post-120-1-...
