A tripod and a wide angle lens are essential. About half an hour before the sun rises the sky begins to show beautiful colours. I like it better if there are clouds. You have to try many days. And so, one day, you will say: that's it! If you want the most of the dinamic range and the most complete colour palette, shoot HDR. That's it.
