Munchen, Part 4, 14 March 1980

Munich in 1980 was a paradise for train watchers. It probably still is, just different trains.

I arrived on the overnight Austria Express from Amsterdam. I'd spent the day before in the Netherlands and had made very tentative plans to meet someone the night of the 14th in Munchen and take the overnight Orient Express to Paris. In the event, the other person decided not to spend the weekend in Paris, but, as I said the plans were very tentative.

I spent the day exploring the city and watching trains at several suburban locations. Those albums are on line on Facebook and Flickr.

As I was leaving on the Orient Express, which was due out at 2047 (847pm), I made my way back to the Hauptbahnhof in late afternoon, got some dinner and watched trains from an overpass that gave a good view of the station approaches. The sunset added some interest to the photos as old 144s and 118s switched cars and Intercity, D-Zugs, 141 powered locals and EMUs scurried back and forth. An OBB 1044 backed down to take a train to Austria.

When it was time for the Orient Express, I gathered the bags that I had stashed and got a photo of the train's departure board, but, it seems, no photo of the train. In an era where night and indoor photography required a tripod, I probably did not want to block the platform.

I found a first class compartment, stretched out in my sleeping bag and the next thing I knew, we were arriving at the Gare d'Est in Paris.
