264-driver-1

Let's go to the other side of the world and watch a couple of afternoon trains at Base Line Road station, near Colombo, Sri Lanka, swap the single line tablet with the station master. First up is Kawasaki N2 diesel 730 on a train to Avissawella, the current end of the line.

We won't be riding that, however, because as soon as it clears the block and the next tablet is released, J1a 264, a 4-6-4T, is following with another train. We rode that as far as Nugegoda with the chief boiler inspector of the Sri Lanka Government Railways had invited us home with him.

The tablet system, like the staff system, required a train to have a physical tablet to be authorized into a block. Only one tablet could be removed from the electrically interlocked tablet machines at each end of a block section at a time, preventing two trains being in the same block at the same time.
