the Dutchess

Nobue-san is her name. The nicest elderly woman in my neighborhood. With my broken Japanese and her broken English, I found out she spent time living in Nanking when it was part of the Japanese Empire. She worked in a bar on Dobuita dori (the Honch) outside of the base in Yokosuka shortly after WWII and went by the name "Julie" because Americans had trouble with her name. She had a boyfriend named Bob who was an electrician onboard USS Ajax. She kept her money in a suitcase and her mom asked her about it. She used to say "no money, no honey" to the customers. Not sure if she was a prostitute or a bargirl, but she is a very nice old woman now. Her eyes have seen a lot. She is mostly full of jokes now but if I knew more Japanese, I could learn a lot from her.

I haven't seen her for about 7 months now. I hope all is well with you, Nobue-san! You're missed around Yasuura!!!
