The good life….
If you were lucky enough to be a wealthy citizen of Pompeii, your home or domus, might have had a beautiful floor like the one shown here. “Domus is a Latin word that means house. Domus were typically built around a central hall, or atrium, with suites of rooms grouped around it. The atrium was often square or rectangular and used for public activities and family functions, while the peristyle, or colonnaded court, at the rear contained the family's private living quarters. Domus could range in size from small houses to luxurious mansions and could also serve as a place of business and religious center. Grander examples may have multiple stories and lavish decorations like frescoes, fountains, and statues. Archeologists also found coins, thoroughbred horses with bronze and iron accessories, and well-preserved frescoes and murals of mythological characters.”
